Chapter 22, 23, 24 and 25
Conrad attends the swim meet after school. The swim team is not doing the greatest; they’ve lost four meets and won one. Conrad feels a bit of regret for dropping the team. After the game Conrad was walking to the car and all the boys came out to talk to him. Stillman made a comment about Jeannine and it set Con off. Con swung at Stillman and knocked him to the ground. Lazenby grabbed Con off of Stillman and Con got into his car. Lazenby got into the car with him to talk to him. Lazenby upset told Con that he couldn’t go through the grieving of Buck himself and to let him go through it with him. Con then left and went home. When he got home he was quite upset about hurting Stillman and was worried about him. Later that night in chapter 23 Calvin came home and Con told Cal about the incident. Cal reassured him that Stillman would be fine, especially since when Con left Stillman was on his feet and fine. Cal looks at the fight as a positive thing, as this means that Conrad is turning his anger outward instead of inner, which the doctor said was a good sign. Calvin however was very frustrated with the fact that Beth didn’t wake Con and send him to his room. That she didn’t even notice Con down stairs. In Chapter 24 Calvin and Beth leave for Dallas. Conrad is to stay at his grandparent’s house. During supper his grandmother gave him the grills, asking all the questions about school and why his marks were low, telling him how he used to be and asking what happened. After supper Conrad went to Jeannine’s work to pick her up and they got stuck babysitting mike for the night. Jeannine goes in to the kitchen to make popcorn for mike and Conrad goes in shortly after. Jeannine started crying in the kitchen and Conrad learnt what it was like to feel needed. Chapter 25 is about Calvin and Beth in Dallas at Beth’s brother’s house after the first portion of the golf tournament. Everyone was happy for Calvin and Beth was happy too. Calvin shot seventy one, and if he did the same thing the next day he would win the tournament.
Analysis Chapter 22, 23, 24 and 25
This section is kind of filler section. Conrad attended the swim meet after school. The swim team sucks. They have won one out of five meets. Conrad does feel regret for dropping the team, but he has better things to do. After the game Conrad fought Stillman. Most people would take this as a very bad thing, however it was good! This means that Conrad is finally directing his anger out towards something other than himself. We also learn in this section that Lazenby and all the other guys used to be very good friends with Stillman. This has something to do with Conrad losing touch with the guys. Conrad’s still grieving about his brother. It hurts to talk to anyone about Buck. Buck was best friends with all those guys and did everything with Conrad with them. When Conrad got home, he was upset about fighting Stillman. Conrad told his dad about the fight and his dad basically said—oh well. Calvin and Beth left for Dallas in this section and Conrad stayed at his grandparents. Conrad’s grandma (Beth’s mom) is exactly like Beth. She is very pushy and needs to know what is going on. She questions Con, and criticizes Con for the whole supper hour at the table. Conrad just makes fun of the critiques and pokes fun at his grandmother. After supper Conrad went out on his second date with Jeannine. Instead of going out, they ended up staying in and babysitting Jeannine’s little brother Mike. Calvin and Beth are doing well in Dallas and Calvin’s holding his personal best in the golf tournament. He shot seventy one, if he was to shoot seventy one the next day he would take the tournament. They are happy and things seem to be looking up, but this will be short lived.
